Often when the words oils and fats are mentioned, many health-conscious individuals turn off. What they fail to realize is that there are good fats and bad fats. Total avoidance of oils and fats is detrimental to health.

Truth about Fish Oil
Essential fatty acids must always be part of our daily diet – without them, we take one step closer to our deaths. Essential fatty acids are divided into two families: omega-6 EFAs and omega-3 EFAs. Although there are only very slight differences to distinguish the two groups of essential fatty acids from each other, studies have revealed that too much intake of omega-6 EFAs can lead to inflammation, blood clotting and tumor growth.

The good news, however, is that the opposite is true for omega-3 EFAs. Omega-6 EFAs can be found in vegetable oils while omega-3 EFAs can be found in fish oils among other foods.

Omega-6 vs. Omega-3
Physicians and scientists are of the same opinion that the cause behind increasing cases of heart disease, hypertension or high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes, premature aging and certain kinds of cancer is none other than an imbalanced intake of omega-3 and omega-6 EFAs.

Omega-6 EFAs can be found in vegetable oils. This includes but is not limited to corn oil and soy oil, both of which contains high amounts of linoleic acid. Omega-3 EFAs on the other hand can be found also in marine plankton and walnut and flaxseed oils.

Note that fatty fish and fish oils contain eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), fatty acids that have been observed to provide many benefits to the human body. In the early 1970’s, a study on Greenland Eskimos revealed that one of the major reasons why they rarely suffer from heart diseases is because of their high-fat diet (mainly composed of fish).

The two essential fatty acids, EPA and DHA, are also helpful in preventing atherosclerosis, heart attacks, depression and various forms of cancer. Fish oil supplemented food have also proven to be useful in treating illnesses like rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, Raynaud’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

Other Benefits of Fish Oil
There are a lot more illnesses and situations in which intake of fish oil has proven significantly beneficial.

Healthier Heart
The heart is inarguably one of the most important parts of our body and having an unhealthy heart means having to suffer a rather limited lifespan. Naturally, it’s in our best interests to keep our hearts happy and healthy and one way of doing that is eating food that contains fish oil.

In Athens, Greece, for instance, a study was made to show if there was a direct relationship between high fish diet and inflammation of blood vessels. The results revealed that those who ate more fish than the others had a lower level of C-reactive protein and interleukin-6, factors that are commonly used to measure likelihood of blood vessel inflammation. These benefits remained even when the various risks associated with high fish diet were taken into account.

Fish to Become Thin
In Perth, Australia, a study had revealed that fish consumption can be used against hypertension and obesity. Researchers of the UWA (University of Western Australia) have discovered that a weight-loss diet which includes a regular amount of fish consumption can be quite effective in reducing blood pressure and improving glucose tolerance.

Fish Oil to Combat Asthma
People suffering from respiratory problems like asthma tend to be perceived as unfit and unhealthy. They should now be pleased to learn that certain studies have revealed the benefits of fish oil for asthma-burdened-individuals. Statistics show that approximately 20 to 25% of children today suffer one form of asthma or another at a certain point in their lives. And certain evidence reveals a regular diet of food with high linoleic acid content as the reason behind it.

Researchers of UW (University of Wyoming) conducted a study by subjecting a number of children to a high-fish diet while others continued with their regular diet. Results revealed that the participants who ate more fish were less prone to asthma attacks and were able to breathe more easily as well.

Please Note: Nothing is good when consumed or used excessively but complete avoidance of a particular food type is equally harmful as well. Ask your nutritionist for the right amount of fish intake for your age and health status.

Tamiflu, which was tested for Bird Flu, is the best bet to fight the swine flu virus of year 2009, which is a new strain of virus without a proven vaccine. Therefore many governments are increasing their stocks for Tamiflu because it is one of the best possible medicines to combat the A/H1N1 swine flu virus.

The swine flu virus of year 2009 is a new strain of virus, and hence currently there is no proven Swine Flu vaccine, and that is one of the main reasons why dozens of people have already died from it, and WHO has raised the threat of this disease to level 5, which is the second highest in the pandemic threat scale of 6.

The 2009 swine flu outbreak began in April 2009 with a new strain of influenza virus. The new strain is commonly called swine flu, but some parties object to the name and it has also been referred to as Mexican flu, swine-origin influenza, North American influenza, and 2009 H1N1 flu.

The outbreak is believed to have started in March 2009, in a Mexican town called La Gloria, which is located on the border of a pig farming center where over a million pigs are raised every year.

And it is believed that the virus has somehow used the pigs as a carrier and mutated into a human-communicable disease in one of the people in contact their contact.

Local outbreaks of an influenza-like illness were first detected in three areas of Mexico, but the virus responsible was not clinically identified as a new strain until April 24, 2009.

Following the identification, its presence was soon confirmed in various Mexican states and in Mexico City. Within days, isolated cases (and suspected cases) were identified elsewhere in Mexico, the U.S., and several other Northern Hemisphere countries.

By April 28, the new strain was confirmed to have spread to Spain, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, and Israel, and the virus was suspected in many other nations, with a total of over 3,000 candidate cases, prompting the World Health Organization (WHO) to change its pandemic alert phase to “Phase 5″, which denotes “widespread human infection”.

Despite the scale of the alert, the WHO stated on April 29 that a majority of people infected with the virus have made a full recovery without need of medical attention or antiviral drugs.

The new virus strain seems to be a mutation of four strains of influenza A virus subtype H1N1. Analysis at the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) identified the four component strains as one endemic in humans, one endemic in birds, and two endemic in pigs (swine).

On April 25, 2009, the WHO formally determined the situation to be a “public health emergency of international concern”, with knowledge lacking in regard to “the clinical features, epidemiology, and virology of reported cases and the appropriate responses”.Government health agencies around the world expressed concerns over the outbreak and are monitoring the situation closely.

Bird & Swine Flu Information

The infection known as “Bird Flu” or “Swine Flu” is caused by the “avian influenza virus” (avian – bird, influenza – flu). Although these types of flu viruses are naturally transmitted from one bird to another, (wild birds from around the world are thought to carry the virus in their body) they do not normally render their hosts ill.

Unfortunately, the Bird Flu is extremely contagious among birds; therefore this infection can easily be transmitted to domestic birds like chickens, ducks, and turkeys – eventually leading to their death.

One swine strain was widespread in the United States, the other in Eurasia. The common human H1N1 influenza virus affects millions of people every year.

According to the WHO, “In annual influenza epidemics 5-15% of the population are affected with upper respiratory tract infections, which results in between 250,000 and 500,000 deaths every year around the world. ”

In industrialized countries most of these deaths occur in those 65 or older – ie people with weaker immune systems. The United Nations WHO and the U.S. CDC have expressed serious concern about the situation, as it has the potential to become a flu pandemic due to the novelty of the influenza strain, its transmission from human to human, and the unusually high mortality rate in Mexico.

Common cold/Flu, Avian Flu, or Swine Flu?

Although the deadly Bird & Swine Flu continues to spread worldwide with the help of migratory birds, most people will not recognise the difference between a common cold and the Avian Flu.

Following is a list of the symptoms of the common cold against that of Bird & Swine Flu in order to help you and your family take better care of yourselves.

Remember: paying attention to details and learning this difference could actually save your life and those of your immediate family.

Please Note: As the Avian Flu and Swine Flu virus spreads throughout the world, even a normal lifestyle can put you at risk. Even the most innocent handshake or close indoor seating arrangements have made churches, mosques and synagogues dangerous places to be.

Spending time in a place where lots of people crowd together increases the risk of being infected. Metro trains and public transport are the most likely carriers of the virus within a city. So please avoid public places to the extent possible.

Scientists at Melbourne University in Australia have discovered that certain skin cells, called dendritic cells, can recognize viruses and respond right away, a finding which could improve treatment of viral skin infections.

The findings describe the function of the cells that trigger the initial immune response to viral infection, known as dendritic cells.

“Dendritic cells are like police patrolling our blood and tissues for anything unusual. There are many different types of them, so we wanted to examine how they differ in their function,” said Dr Sammy Bedoui of Melbourne University, who led an international team.

According to them, the work identifies previously unrecognized first-line defence mechanisms important in barrier locations such as the skin and the gut, often used as portals of entry by viruses.

Using an animal model of skin infection with the cold sore virus, the scientists examined two aspects of anti-viral immune responses by studying the cells involved in the initial stimulation of the immune response, and cells that remember past infections to boost the response after reinfection.

Conversely, if carriers of this genetic variant have low levels of these vitamins and minerals, their risk of aggressive prostate increases substantially, as great as 10-fold, over those who maintain higher levels of these nutrients, they write in today’s issue of Cancer Research.

“This large prospective study provides further evidence that oxidative stress may be one of the important mechanisms for prostate cancer development and progression, and adequate intake of antioxidants, such as selenium, lycopene and vitamin E, may help prevent prostate cancer,” said Dr Haojie Li, a researcher at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School.

The new findings are based on an analysis of 567 men diagnosed with prostate cancer between 1982 and 1995, and 764 cancer-free men from the Physicians Health Study.

The initial goal of this study was to assess the effect of aspirin and beta-carotene on men’s health. Li’s team decided to check for variants of the gene that codes for manganese superoxide dismutatase (MnSOD), an important enzyme that works as an antioxidant in human cells to defend against disease.

The MnSOD gene is passed from parents to offspring in one of three forms: VV, VA or AA.

“Compared with men with the MnSOD VV or VA genotype, people with the AA genotype seem to be more sensitive to the antioxidant status,” said Li. “Men with the AA genotype are more susceptible to prostate cancer if their antioxidant levels are low.”

The study’s results found that a quarter of the men in the study carried the MnSOD AA genotype, half carried the VA genotype, and the remaining quarter carried the VV genotype.

The results indicated that the VA and VV men were at equivalent risk for developing prostate cancer across all levels of antioxidants in their blood.

But compared to MnSOD VV or VA carriers in the lowest quartile of selenium levels, MnSOD AA males had an 89 per cent greater risk for developing aggressive prostate cancer if they had low blood levels of the mineral.

On the other hand, MnSOD AA carriers with high selenium – those men in the highest quartile – had a 65 per cent lower risk than the MnSOD VV or VA males who maintained low levels of selenium.

“The levels of selenium in the highest quartile of these men are not abnormally high,” Li said. “Our range is neither extremely high nor extremely low.”

While similar trends were observed for lycopene and vitamin E when te

sted independently, the contrast in relative risk was most pronounced for the men who had high blood levels for all three antioxidants combined, said the researchers.

“Among men with the MnSOD AA genotype, we observed a 10-fold difference in risk for aggressive prostate cancer, when comparing men with high versus low levels of antioxidants combined,”said Li. “In contrast, among men with the VV or VA genotype, the prostate cancer risk was only weakly altered by these antioxidant levels.”

“Our study, as well as many other epidemiological studies, encourages dietary intake of nutrients such as lycopene from tomato products, or supplements for vitamin E and selenium to reduce risk of prostate cancer,” said Li.

Prostate cancer is one of the biggest cancer killers in industrial countries and affects more than 500,000 men worldwide every year. This number is expected to increase with the aging population.

Similar interactions between dietary antioxidants and the variations in the MnSOD gene have previously been linked to risk for breast cancer.

Vitamin C is critical for health. Since it’s water soluble, the body can’t store vitamin C for later use in the body, therefore it’s important that we get the recommended dose each day.

Vitamin C plays a part in everything from tissue regeneration and healing to preventing illness and infection.

Vitamin C is used by the body to produce collagen. Collagen is the building block of skin, bone, cartilage, blood vessels and ligaments, and also keeps the skin smooth and free of wrinkles. The body also needs vitamin C to produce dentin, which is a structural component in teeth.

Vitamin C helps the body recovery much faster from wounds and injury. It does this by speeding up the rate at which the body repairs itself. Vitamin C has also been shown to reduce the amount of histamines in the body.

Some studies have shown that one of the benefits of vitamin C is that it helps to reduce blood pressure, thereby lowering the risk of cardiovascular disease. It does this by keeping levels of nitric oxide up. Nitric oxide is a chemical produced by the body that relaxes the blood vessels. By doing this, it also reduces the risk of stroke.

Benefits Of Vitamin C As An Antioxidant

One of the most important benefits of vitamin C is its role as an antioxidant. Antioxidants work by removing dangerous free radicals from the body.

A free radical is an unstable oxygen atom. These are normally produced by the body during a process call oxidation and are necessary for life. However, once formed, free radicals start chain reactions that are then very damaging to cells.

By slowing or preventing the oxidation of molecules, or even terminating the chain reactions free radicals create, antioxidants help regulate the number of free radicals in the body, and minimize the damage they may cause.

Another one of the benefits of vitamin C as an antioxidant is its role in boosting the immune system by increasing the body’s defense against viral infections, such as the common cold and influenza. Although it hasn’t been firmly proven yet, the antioxidant capacity of vitamin C may also help cancer and macular degeneration.

Conclusion

These are but a few of the benefits of vitamin C. Essential for life and good health, it is imperative that we include an adequate amount of this hardworking nutrient into our diets. By consuming foods daily that are rich in vitamin C such as broccoli, berries, leafy green vegetables and citrus fruits, we can be sure that we’re getting just what our bodies need.

Stem cell banking is a trend that is catching up in different parts of the world. Stem cells from umbilical cord blood are collected at the time of delivery when the cord connecting the baby to mother is cut.

Stem cell therapy has the potential to radically change the treatment of human disease. Cord blood technology has been used in the US since 1990. Parents and guardians are increasingly seeking to store their children’s stem cells as an insurance policy against future life-threatening diseases.

Stem cells have the potential to grow into any other type of cells. They are the building blocks of the blood and immune system that can reproduce into other cell types, including heart, muscle and nerve. Within a few weeks, 300 people have approached us for information on stem cell banking.

Umbilical cord blood stem cells have been used over the years in an increasing number of treatments including leukemia, malignant tumors, blood disorders, red cell disorders and more.

Currently research in the use of stem cells to treat more than 85 diseases is being undertaken. Stem cells are the natural repair kit of the human body. In the last few years, more than 10,000 patients in over 150 countries have been treated with cord blood stem cell transplants.

Europe’s largest stem cell banking company, Cryo-Save, also launched operations in India recently. The company sees huge potential in this business and has has invested in 10 stem cell storage banks. The company is offering a stem cell storage kit at Rs.75,000 (about USD 1500) that includes the cost of collecting stem cells at the time of delivery to processing and preserving it for next 21 years. The company has also tied up with several hospitals and gynecologists to make expecting mothers aware about the benefits of stem cell therapy.

We believe similar companies operate in US also, though the costs maybe higher. While it is hard to plan much ahead in life, it looks like there are couple who are ready to spend and buy this “stem cell banking” insurance for their kids future health. As always, please ask questions before opting for any service, and insist of clear answers in layman’s terms, and get all agreements in writing.

Of course things like common cold etc keep happening, but its the bigger things you have to guard against.

Is it true that pregnancy tend to contract bronchitis?

Yes, it is likely for pregnant women to get bronchitis, because during pregnancy, the uterus expands to provide more room for the growing baby. However, this causes other organs, such as the lungs, to be compressed/pressured. This often leads to more sinus infections in pregnant women—and sinus infections can lead to bronchitis.

The simultaneous occurrence of bronchitis and pregnancy often inhibits the woman’s ability to breathe, which is dangerous for the baby’s health and development.

Usually antibiotics or drugs would be the quick fix for this situation. However, pregnant women must be careful about which drugs they take, because these too can damage the baby’s health.

Anytime a pregnant woman is considering taking medicine of any kind, she needs to work very closely with her doctor to determine what is best for her health.

How To Avoid Bronchitis During Pregnancy?

Here are some steps to take. First of all, women who are pregnant should avoid being around people with colds or bronchitis. This means think twice before getting into crowded metros. Additionally, if a woman is pregnant during the flu season (December through March), then she should get the flu vaccine to protect herself from serious cases of pneumonia or influenza.

Question: What causes Yeast Infection?

Answer: Yeast infections result from an overgrowth of yeast in the body. It begins in the intestines, where the candida organism exists normally in small amounts, but it can frequently spread elsewhere in the body, creating what is known as “systemic candidiasis” or “candida syndrome.”

Question: Is Yeast Infection common?

Answer: Yes, it is. About 75 percent of women and men have a yeast infection during their lives. And almost half of women have two or more yeast infections. A vaginal yeast infection is irritation of the vagina and the area around the vagina, called the vulva. It is caused by an overgrowth of the fungus or yeast Candida. Yeast normally live in the vagina in small numbers, but when the bacteria in the vagina become out of balance, too many yeast grow and hence cause an infection.

Question: What are the symptoms of vaginal yeast infection and vulvitis?

Answer: Vaginal yeast infection and vulvitis cause symptoms that are nonspecific, which means that aside from the yeast infection, other conditions can cause the identical symptoms. The most common symptom of a vaginal yeast infection is itching in the vaginal and/or vulvar area.

Other symptoms of vaginal yeast infection and vulvitis include: burning, soreness, pain during intercourse and/or urination, and vaginal discharge. (Vaginal discharge is not always present, but when it occurs, the discharge is odorless and typically has a whitish, thick appearance and texture, like cottage cheese.)

Vulvitis can also cause local pain in addition to the above symptoms. Pain in the vulvar area is referred to as vulvodynia. In up to 5% of women, yeast vulvovaginitis may cause a recurrent problem.

A recurrent yeast infection occurs when a woman has four or more infections in one year that are not related to antibiotic use. Recurrent yeast infections may be related to an underlying medical condition and may require more aggressive treatment.

Question: How can I treat Yeast Infection?

Answer: Yeastrol is a homeopathic yeast infection relief product that provides instant relief to multiple symptoms of a yeast infection.
