Often when the words oils and fats are mentioned, many health-conscious individuals turn off. What they fail to realize is that there are good fats and bad fats. Total avoidance of oils and fats is detrimental to health.

Truth about Fish Oil
Essential fatty acids must always be part of our daily diet – without them, we take one step closer to our deaths. Essential fatty acids are divided into two families: omega-6 EFAs and omega-3 EFAs. Although there are only very slight differences to distinguish the two groups of essential fatty acids from each other, studies have revealed that too much intake of omega-6 EFAs can lead to inflammation, blood clotting and tumor growth.

The good news, however, is that the opposite is true for omega-3 EFAs. Omega-6 EFAs can be found in vegetable oils while omega-3 EFAs can be found in fish oils among other foods.

Omega-6 vs. Omega-3
Physicians and scientists are of the same opinion that the cause behind increasing cases of heart disease, hypertension or high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes, premature aging and certain kinds of cancer is none other than an imbalanced intake of omega-3 and omega-6 EFAs.

Omega-6 EFAs can be found in vegetable oils. This includes but is not limited to corn oil and soy oil, both of which contains high amounts of linoleic acid. Omega-3 EFAs on the other hand can be found also in marine plankton and walnut and flaxseed oils.

Note that fatty fish and fish oils contain eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), fatty acids that have been observed to provide many benefits to the human body. In the early 1970’s, a study on Greenland Eskimos revealed that one of the major reasons why they rarely suffer from heart diseases is because of their high-fat diet (mainly composed of fish).

The two essential fatty acids, EPA and DHA, are also helpful in preventing atherosclerosis, heart attacks, depression and various forms of cancer. Fish oil supplemented food have also proven to be useful in treating illnesses like rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, Raynaud’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

Other Benefits of Fish Oil
There are a lot more illnesses and situations in which intake of fish oil has proven significantly beneficial.

Healthier Heart
The heart is inarguably one of the most important parts of our body and having an unhealthy heart means having to suffer a rather limited lifespan. Naturally, it’s in our best interests to keep our hearts happy and healthy and one way of doing that is eating food that contains fish oil.

In Athens, Greece, for instance, a study was made to show if there was a direct relationship between high fish diet and inflammation of blood vessels. The results revealed that those who ate more fish than the others had a lower level of C-reactive protein and interleukin-6, factors that are commonly used to measure likelihood of blood vessel inflammation. These benefits remained even when the various risks associated with high fish diet were taken into account.

Fish to Become Thin
In Perth, Australia, a study had revealed that fish consumption can be used against hypertension and obesity. Researchers of the UWA (University of Western Australia) have discovered that a weight-loss diet which includes a regular amount of fish consumption can be quite effective in reducing blood pressure and improving glucose tolerance.

Fish Oil to Combat Asthma
People suffering from respiratory problems like asthma tend to be perceived as unfit and unhealthy. They should now be pleased to learn that certain studies have revealed the benefits of fish oil for asthma-burdened-individuals. Statistics show that approximately 20 to 25% of children today suffer one form of asthma or another at a certain point in their lives. And certain evidence reveals a regular diet of food with high linoleic acid content as the reason behind it.

Researchers of UW (University of Wyoming) conducted a study by subjecting a number of children to a high-fish diet while others continued with their regular diet. Results revealed that the participants who ate more fish were less prone to asthma attacks and were able to breathe more easily as well.

Please Note: Nothing is good when consumed or used excessively but complete avoidance of a particular food type is equally harmful as well. Ask your nutritionist for the right amount of fish intake for your age and health status.

Alli weight-loss pill: Does it work? Is Alli the solution to your weight-loss woes?

Alli (pronounced AL-eye) is meant for overweight adults who are struggling to shed excess pounds. Alli is the only FDA approved, over-the-counter weight loss product. It works and its safe — that’s why it has got FDA approval for weight loss. It works by preventing your body from absorbing some of the fat you eat.

Following is a detailed Q&Ato obtain Alli Weight Loss Drug Review: A Mayo Clinic specialist discusses the effectiveness of Alli, an over-the-counter weight-loss pill. Another drug is available to aid your weight-loss efforts, but this time you don’t need a prescription.

With its easy access and weight-loss promises, is Alli the best answer for weight-loss so far?

Donald Hensrud, M.D., a preventive medicine and nutrition specialist at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn., answers common questions about Alli.

What is Alli?
Alli is the reduced-strength version of orlistat (Xenical), a prescription drug to treat obesity. It’s approved for over-the-counter sale to overweight adults 18 years and older. Alli is meant to be used in conjunction with a low-calorie, low-fat diet and regular exercise.

How does Alli work?
Alli promotes weight loss by decreasing absorption of fat by the intestines, which reduces the number of calories you absorb. Lipase, an enzyme found in the digestive tract, helps break down dietary fat into smaller components, so it can be used or stored for energy.

Alli works by disabling lipase, which prevents the enzyme from breaking down the fat while it’s in your digestive tract. The undigested fat continues through the intestines and is eliminated through bowel movements.Alli is taken with fat-containing meals, up to three times a day.

Because of how Alli works, it’s recommended that you eat no more than 15 grams of fat with each meal. Eating higher amounts of fat can cause unwanted effects, such as urgent bowel movements, diarrhea and gas with oily spotting. For more information click here.

How much weight could I lose using Alli?

Alli can help you lose weight, but the weight loss likely won’t be great — perhaps just a few pounds more than you would lose with diet and exercise alone.

Only a small number of studies have evaluated the effectiveness of Alli. And many of the weight-loss estimates are based on studies conducted on its prescription-strength counterpart, Xenical. The average weight loss for prescription-strength Xenical is modest — about 6 pounds greater than diet and exercise alone after one year.

So at half the strength, Alli could conceivably result in an average of 3 pounds lost in a year in addition to the approximately 8 pounds you could expect to lose from diet and exercise alone.

When shouldn’t I take Alli?

You shouldn’t take Alli if you:
- Are at a healthy weight
- Are taking cyclosporine Have had an organ transplant
- Have problems absorbing food
- The drug also may pose risks for anyone who takes blood-thinning medication or has diabetes or thyroid disease.

Orlistat decreases the absorption of certain fat-soluble vitamins — for example, vitamins A, D and E. So if you’re taking Alli, you need to take a daily vitamin supplement (at a time different from when you take Alli) to prevent potential nutrient deficiencies. For more information click here.

How long do I need to take Alli?

According to the manufacturer, most weight loss occurs within the first six months. Many people who take medications to lose weight regain the weight they lost when they stop taking the medication. Therefore, to keep the weight off, many people continue taking medications indefinitely along with eating a low-calorie diet and exercising regularly.

How does Alli fit into a healthy weight-loss plan?

As you consider Alli as a weight-loss aid, make sure that you make every effort to exercise, change your eating habits and adjust any other lifestyle factors that have contributed to your excess weight. Alli isn’t the easy answer to weight loss and is meant only to supplement — not replace — a healthy diet and regular exercise. Now, you can create the most effective weight-loss plan for you. For more information click here.

Hello Folks,
Thanks for all your questions by email and the comments you have been posting on the specific articles. This weekend, I wanted to write a small post to sincerely request you to do one thing from this new year 2008:

Please Increase Greens & Fruits in your Diet.

There are numerous studies pointing out the benefits, so I won’t throw statistics at you. But please do understand that our environment is changing, and the ambient pollution levels in cities are higher than ever before. In addition, our daily/weekly consumption of processed foods is much higher today (try reading all those 0.01% additions they add to the cans and packaged foods).

Raw Greens and Fruits are the best bet to fight the negative effect on the body. Increase their intake by whatever amount you can – for yourself and for your family. (This advise applies to me as well!). Its the best natural insurance you can buy, and it won’t cost much.

Let me end this with a note I got from a friend:

“To make money we loose our health and then to restore our health we loose money. We live as if we are never going to die and we die as if we never lived.”

Wishing You Great Health!
Your Health Advisor

The human immune system is often overlooked yet without it we would not get very old at all. Our immune system is a complicated system, designed to both protect and defend us against microbes that could do us harm. Our immunity is based on many factors, most of which are tied into the presence of key nutrients needed for proper immune function.

Nutrients for immunity are many and include beta D Glucan, mycelial mushroom extracts, colostrums, and others. Beta Glucan mycelial mushroom extract, and colostrums, when combined with key vitamins and minerals can provide significant immune enhancement. These immune supplements vary in their action, but if they are to be taken for some time, it is essential that the immune supplement provide both stimulation and nourishment for the immune system.

Over-stimulation of the immune system over long periods of time can result in immune exhaustion. Natural immune support should be approached from a variety of ways and any targeted supplement for immune support should address all the known factors of natural immune enhancement. Beta D Glucan and mycelial mushroom extracts and colostrums can be costly, but when combined with other known nutrients for immunity, we can use less of these compounds and still achieve the maximum immune enhancement.

When it comes to nourishing the body, you are not merely what you eat, but rather what you absorb. If you cannot properly and completely break down nutrients from food and food supplements, you can be starving for these essential factors even though you think you are eating reasonably well.

After the age of 40, many people find themselves suffering from indigestion, heartburn, bloating, constipation, and feelings of fullness after meals, especially evening meals. This is due to a breakdown in the production of natural hydrochloric acid production in the stomach. Without this acid, proteins cannot be properly digested. In the absence of these stomach acids, many enzymes, necessary for the digestion of other foods, become deficient as well. The end results are the many common complications of digestion, which include feelings of fullness, gas, bloating, heartburn and constipation.

The over-consumption of anti-acids such as Prilosec, Mylanta, Tums and others, in an attempt to correct what many people erroneously think is excess acid, has contributed greatly to such conditions as osteoporosis, arthritis, heal spurs, kidney and gall stones and calcium deposits on artery walls, leading to atherosclerosis. All of these conditions occur when the body becomes too alkaline and calcium crystallizes and falls out of fluid solution.

Those who have been suffering from long-term digestive problems such as indigestion, heartburn, bloating, constipation and feelings of fullness may have already set the stage for mineral depletion and protein deficiency. Digestive disturbances such as heartburn, bloating, constipation and feelings of fullness can be prevented by ensuring that your body is properly breaking down the vital nutrients necessary to health, found in the foods you eat and the supplements you take.

We use a broad-spectrum approach to digestion, covering protein, fats as well as carbohydrates. Our combination formula provides natural stomach acids and enzyme precursor agents to help the body manufacture all of the digestive enzymatic substances for complete digestion of all food groups.

Enzyme formulas should provide digestive components for protein, fats, and carbohydrates. This, together with natural digestive acids, will, over time, help the body to begin producing these enzymes once again on its own. In the beginning, digestive enzymes should be taken with every meal to help the body to balance its own production of these enzymes once again.

Fats are the most misunderstood of all the food groups. For decades we have been given information about the safety and dangers of fats that has turned out to be simply false.

There are three types of fats naturally found in foods, namely saturated fats, unsaturated or polyunsaturated fats and monounsaturated fats.

Saturated fats are generally solid at room temperature and are, with a couple of exceptions, from animal sources. Saturated fats include butter, lard, animal fats, coconut oil and palm oil. We have been told that saturated fats cause heart disease and contribute to block arteries. This is not true. Our ancestors consumed saturated fats almost exclusively and their rate of heart disease, per capita, was far, far lower than today.

Unsaturated or polyunsaturated fats are generally liquid at room temperature and come from vegetable sources. There are the fats we have been told are the best for us, yet it has been long established that when unsaturated fats are heated or exposed to the air, they oxidize rapidly and form compounds called free radicals. The free radical that causes early heart disease comes almost exclusively from oxidized unsaturated fats. Margarines, shortening and other man-made type fats are the worst of all as these are known as trans fats.

Trans Fats come from liquid unsaturated oils, which have been chemically altered to become solid at room temperature. Trans fats are one of the most deadly forms of fat in the modern diet, responsible for heart disease and many other health problems.

Monounsaturated fats, the best of which is olive oil, are the best fats to consume on a regular basis. Mediterranean countries have used olive oil for thousands of years and in spite of the fact that they have a much higher fat diet than we do, their incidence of heart disease is a fraction of ours — due to the consumption of monounsaturated fats such as olive oil.

Monounsaturated fats protect the heart and cardiovascular system, help to raise HDL and lower the bad LDL cholesterol. An ideal diet of fats would contain moderate amounts of saturated fats, high amounts of monounsaturated fats such as olive oil and almost no unsaturated or polyunsaturated fats.

If you’ve just been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, don’t panic. Your doctor will give you all the information you need in order to test yourself and care for yourself. You can test yourself by using a blood glucose meter.

A blood glucose meter measures your blood sugar to ensure that it’s at a normal level. This is crucial because a blood sugar level that’s too high or too low could be very dangerous for the person with type 1 diabetes.

But by learning what to look out for if your levels get out of control, you’ll be better prepared to deal with any complications that result from your disorder.

About Type 1 Diabetes Information

Diabetes is a condition where the body doesn’t produce enough insulin, which the body uses to convert sugar, or glucose, into energy for everyday activities.

Type 1 Diabetes is more frequently diagnosed in children because it has genetic factors. When someone is diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, it is often scary. However, even though the condition is serious, people who have type 1 diabetes can live long and productive lives. You can learn to live with it and you must know what to look for so that it does not lead to any Type 1 Diabetes complications. By testing yourself regularly and by learning all about diabetes, you will be better prepared to care of yourself and lead a wonderful life ahead!

Type 1 Diabetes Treatment: Medication Kit, Injections and Inhalers

Your doctor will generally prescribe insulin injections for you so that you can manually control your blood glucose levels. It’s important to listen to your doctor and to do just as instructed so that you don’t put yourself in danger.

If your blood glucose levels are too low, you can take a glucose shot or you can eat something with sugar in it. However, your doctor will be able to answer your questions more specifically as only he or she knows your specific condition.

The good news is that they have recently come out with insulin inhalers. These are alternatives to injections so that you don’t have to worry about jabbing yourself with a needle. Ask your doctor for more information on this new type 1 diabetes drug.

If you have type 1 diabetes, it’s important that you begin caring for yourself. If you’re overweight, you should try to lose weight. If you smoke, you should stop immediately, and you should also watch your alcohol intake. If you want to lead a long, normal life, you need to take certain precautions. Type 1 diabetes makes you more susceptible to other conditions and diseases, but by taking care of yourself and by listening closely to your doctor, you can successfully live with diabetes and you can lead a normal, healthy life just like anyone else.

As you may already know, there are two main types of diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes is usually first identified in children or young adults. The beta cells of the pancreas no longer make insulin because the immune system has attacked and destroyed them. Treatment includes taking insulin, making healthy food choices, being active and controlling blood pressure and cholesterol.

Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes. People can develop it at any age. It usually begins with insulin resistance, where fat, muscle, and liver cells do not use insulin properly. At first, the pancreas keeps produces more insulin but over time loses the ability to give out enough insulin in response to meals. Being overweight and doing no exercise increases the chances of type 2. Treatment includes using medicines, making healthy food choices, being active and controlling blood pressure and cholesterol.

The positive news is that there are natural cures available/possible for diabetes and these remedies can easily be added to a healthy diet to help control blood sugar levels. There are two main types of diabetics and a healthy diet as well as vitamin supplements can help diabetics who fall into both categories.

Until quite recently, it was advised that type 2 diabetes patients help their illness with only medication, but doctors now encourage them to look at natural remedies to help. Traditional medications are good but come with side effects, with risks of getting heart disease or strokes.

Natural remedies for diabetes can help the pancreas increase its own making of insulin, lowering the risks of side effects.

Several natural food items are available that can help diabetics control their blood sugar levels with a natural cure. Some examples include

Onions and garlic because research has revealed that onions and garlic can considerably reduce blood sugar levels for even longer periods of time than artificial insulin. Onions are advised to be eaten raw because cooking can make them loose their minerals.

Cayenne pepper can be used as a natural cure to arouse and perk up blood circulation, which is critical for diabetics. Using cod liver oil is also associated with a significantly lower risk of type 1 diabetes .

There are other nature substances that work as at helping diabetes such as the carrot juice, cabbage, coconut, and spinach.

These vitamins and natural foods can help be a natural cure and prevent the further development of diabetes as well as improving a person’s health.
